George Rydell were engaged by Fabcot to design and construct Australia’s most sustainable supermarket. This new multi-level retail project at Heidelberg in Victoria has currently received a 5 Star Green Star – Design & As Built v1.2 – Design Review and will be the first 5 Star Green Star building for Woolworths. The project included the demolishment of the existing supermarket and was delivered on-time and on-budget.
The Woolworths store includes a new kit design incorporating a market-feel with the use of natural timbers, sustainable materials as well as polished concrete floors. New lighting throughout and energy management initiatives were also key design features, with the site comprising an undercroft carpark with end-of-trip facilities, communications rooms and electric vehicle charging.
The ground floor includes a Woolworths supermarket, BWS and a separate café tenancy, whilst level one is a rooftop carpark covered with commercial shade structures. Travelators were installed from the undercroft to the ground level with two large combined goods/passenger lifts travelling to all levels. It has initially had a very positive response from the local community and end users.
